What Is MEDx?

MEDx is highly optimized, portable software for the visualization, processing, and analysis of medical images. Designed especially for medical imaging researchers and system developers, MEDx brings multi-modality, multi-dimensional image processing functionality to the medical imaging research community. With MEDx, users display images and control menus using the industry-standard XWindow display system and  Tcl/Tk interface language. MEDx transforms your computer into a powerful image processing workstation that displays, analyzes, and processes your medical image data in a myriad of innovative ways.

Pricing and Licensing Changes

With the release of MEDx 3.4 and higher, we have made some important changes in how MEDx is built and distributed.

  • No More Add-On Module Pricing! Now all MEDx features, including the Perfusion module, are part of the MEDx base license; there is no longer any additional cost for add-on modules.

  • Electronic Documentation. Starting with MEDx 3.4, the default form of product documentation is electronic. As with our previous MEDx releases, we will make the MEDx User's Guide and other selected documentation available on the MEDx CD and our company website in the form of printable PDF files.

  • MEDx License Agreement. The MEDx Software License Agreement has been amended to require customers who have purchased MEDx with an academic discount to acknowledge and/or cite MEDx in any scholarly publication they create where MEDx has been used to analyze, process, visualize, or generate any data or illustrations for that publication. Per the current MEDx Software License Agreement, we will soon send written notices to this effect to all current academic customers.

MEDx and SPM

Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) is a collection of methods for processing and analyzing functional neuroimaging data, developed by Karl Friston and collaborators at the Institute of Neurology, London. MEDx uses SPM for both PET and MR functional data analysis. SPM enhances existing MEDx functionality as a distinct module with all of the analysis and report features currently familiar to SPM users, including Image Realignment and Registration, Spatial Normalization, Smoothing, and Statistics, available through MEDx's easy-to-use graphic user interface.

MEDx Functional Image Analysis

From the paradigm editor and motion correction, to 3D rendering of fused images and time-series analysis, the functional analysis tools in MEDx provide the features and capabilities that give researchers the assistance they want and need.

The paradigm editor allows construction of a list of epochs, complete with a name for the epoch, the number of scans in each epoch, and the color. Before proceeding to MEDx's motion correction (using AIR 3.08), researchers can detect motion using either animation or center of intensity, and decide whether motion correction is necessary. There are also options for performing additional image processing, through features such as smoothing, intensity normalization, linear de-trending and high-pass temporal filtering.

Once images are processed, MEDx has numerous options for analyzing the data. These options consist of t-test, multiple regression, analysis of variance and/or covariance, and time-series analysis.

Look for FSL in MEDx 3.4.3. This powerful set of programs provides a fast and robust alternative set of tools for functional and structural image analysis that complement and enhance the existing MEDx tool set.

MEDx ImageScript

A simple scripting language interface (an extension of Tcl/Tk) allows automated data analysis. This facility enables the researcher to prototype an image analysis strategy interactively, and then to automate the process using ImageScript.
